Will an EMS Device Give Me Six-Pack Abs?

Electrical Muscle Stimulation (often referred to by the short form EMS) is also known as neuromuscular electrical stimulation and works by using electrically induced impulses to produce muscle contractions. The impulses are delivered to the skin by use of detachable electrodes. The electrode pads are generally lubricated to provide proper contact with the skin and to allow for good conduction of the current. Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) devices has provided observable relief for those suffering from sprains, lower back pain and arthritis.

Electrical muscle stimulators are regulated by the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. This law puts the FDA in charge of regulating the sale of all MedWatch Online Voluntary Reporting Form in the United States. In order to legally sell these devices, manufacturers must abide by the pre-market regulatory requirements set out by the FDA. Most EMS (electrical muscle stimulators) that have been reviewed by the FDA are for use by a health care professional for physical therapy and rehabilitation. If a company plans to sell MedWatch Online Voluntary Reporting Form for home use, they would need to prove to the FDA that they can be used safely and effectively in that setting.

Several MedWatch Online Voluntary Reporting Form have been approved by the FDA for prescription use in treating medical conditions. Health care professionals rely on electric muscle stimulation for patients that require muscle re-education, relaxation of muscle spasm, increased range of motion or prevention of muscle atrophy. These devices are primarily used to assist patients recovering from impaired muscle function caused by a medical condition, not to increase the size of specific muscles enough to affect actual appearance.

Any EMS device that has not met the FDA requirements is illegal and the FDA has not determined if they have been properly designed and manufactured for safe and effective use.

EMS devices are able to tone or firm muscle temporarily, however, so far none of them are confirmed to be able to help you lose weight, reduce the size of your waist or give you "rock hard" abs.

You won't be able to get those "six-pack" abs just by using an EMS device. Applying an electrical current to muscles, however, may cause them to contract. While the repeated stimulation of your muscles using electrical current can tone and strengthen, the only way to actually change your appearance is by eating a sensible diet and doing regular exercise.

The manufacturer of a medical device should be informed of any malfunctions. You can also submit a report to MedWatch, the FDA's voluntary reporting program. You have four options for submitting a report to MedWatch: MedWatch Online Voluntary Reporting Form online, by telephone at 1-800-FDA-1088; by FAX at 1-800-FDA-0178; or by mail to MedWatch, Food and Drug Administration, HF-2, 5600 Fishers Lane, Rockville, MD 20857
